FOREIGN SUPERMARKTS

One of the great joys/challenges of doing what I do is negotiating foreign supermarkets. Or markts as they seem to be called in many countries in Europe.

My friend Robin has an apartment in Amsterdam that he rarely uses and has kindly allowed me to stay here. It's like having my own swingin' bachelor pad in the city. But a bachelor needs to eat breakfast. So I had to go hunt down some foodstuffs.

The big supermarket chain in The Netherlands, or at least here in Amsterdam, is Albert Heijn. You don't pronounce the J. It's smaller than most US supermarkets but about the same size as the ones in Japan. At least in Japan, though, I could read the packages. Here I had to guess. I figured that "roomboter" in a yellow package was probably butter. I was right! I also got some cereal and some halfvoole melk, which I believe to be 2% milk. I'm guessing "halfvoole" is "half whole" and therefore half the usual fat of whole milk, therefore 2%. Deductive reasoning! Or something...

They say — somebody says anyway, I can't remember who (which may be relevant) — that one way to avoid becoming senile in your old age is to never get into a rut. You've got to keep changing your habits and not get stuck in routines, apparently. If this is true I ought to be in good shape. It's pretty intense when even basic things like figuring out what's edible become problematic. I suppose our ancient ancestors had to do a lot of that, though.

Friday I'll be in Paris. Then the following week I'm in Berlin. Leonard Cohen took Manhattan first and then Berlin. But I'm starting with Paris.

The rest of my schedule is at this link. There are still a bunch of things you can participate in. So if you're in Poitiers, Berlin, Munich, Bielefeld, Östringen, Essex, Antwerp or Manchester your plans are already made!

See ya!

It would be nice if something so simple kept one from becoming senile. But I think that the brain ages along with the rest of body usually. That is to say you can avoid some maladies but another is surely going to get you. No one gets out of here alive as someone said, I forget who..

A few years ago I worked with the local Dept. of Aging. We had regular monthly informative programs for the general public. One speaker, a retired med. Dr. who was 80 or so himself and sharp as a tack, said that something like 90% of people over age 70 develop some form of dementia. He acted like its simply an inevitability, part of the life sentence of humanity.

anon #108 said...

Some people will sacrifice much for cosiness, niceness and mutual support. It’s understandable; life can be tough.

The cosiness and mutual support of the Treeleaf enterprise must be very nice for those who are part of it. It’s understandable that Treeleafers will be likely to perceive those who query or challenge niceness as intruders with evil intentions. And if you believe niceness has religious authority - if, for example, you believe niceness (or "compassion," or "loving-kindness") is what Buddhism is all about and consider yourself a Buddhdist – you may subscribe to the view that anyone exhibiting signs of not-niceness is a non-Buddhist; a heretic; a deluded person; a person who should be ignored or dismissed…certainly not someone who might have something useful to say.

But some of us are attracted to something other than niceness in Buddhism, something more to do with honesty than niceness. Valuing honesty - starting with ourselves – we quickly discover that many of the thoughts seeming to pop up in our heads, and many of the motivations apparently driving our actions aren’t so very nice at all. So it’s hard to trust niceness if you’re honest. If you’re to be honest, it seems you must be prepared to sacrifice niceness.

There again, being honest with yourself might lead you to doubt the value of expressing the feelings you honestly feel, the opinions you honestly hold. What to do? It may be that all we can do is act – and watch what happens.

Fred said...

If most of the processing in the
human brain is subconscious how
are you to know what " being honest with yourself " means?

If the self is a shifting mosaic of
characters what does " being honest
with yourself " mean.

Are you responsible for the self
that existed before 25,000 hours
in zazen?

Where is this self anyway?

anon #108 said...

That's right, Fred. There is no self. I forgot.

What now?

(If someone says, "Have a cup of tea" I won't be held responsible for the results of my subconscious programming.)

Fred said...

"What now?"

Strive on with diligence.

In some reactions, the conscious
self has no say in what occurs.
The conscious self then invents a
plausible explanation for what
happened. So saying you are being
honest is itself dishonest. Chodo's
deluded self and An3drew's blind
normal are the reality.

Gerald said...

Jundo has always placed great stress on politeness at treeleaf. That is one way of not getting questioned too closely on how you conduct yourself away from the safety of the cyber-sangha. If Jundo were forced to be honest he might spontaneously burst into flame.

Gerald said...

Jundo stresses manners over honesty. It's an ego defense mechanism for him. Don't you threaten who I think I am and I won't threaten who you think you are. That was evident when the leafers felt threatened by the polite but direct questions of Praxis.

I am sorry if some unhappiness in your life triggered this, and I am sorry if I added to your unhappiness.

I am from the Bronx, and I know my way around the playground and some words to make a sailor blush. The point I was trying to inelegantly make is that we don't talk like that every day, especially in a Buddhist Sangha, because it is hurtful and starts trouble. It is also not the same to call someone a "pipsqueek" and a "motherfucker". In the same way, I also do not think you literally gave Gerald the crabs, but that's how unfounded rumors start. And I am sorry that I raised your family sadness, but outsiders unfamiliar with the ins and outs would be wrong to tell how your should handle it.

So, I think we are all on the same page now.

Look, you do some good work in criticizing some folks who need to be criticized like Ken Wilber and Andrew Cohen. I think you see that these last posts were not up to your usual objectivity and balance. You should take them down, and write something constructive instead.

You know, I get angry sometimes. Most people do (maybe not the Buddha). I get really angered when I see outrageous situation sometimes. This made me pretty angry. I am damn sarcastic when there is something to be sarcastic about. But that does not mean that someone is an "angry person" who gets angry every day, like you tried to imply. I am sorry that you have some anger thing, as you admit. It does not mean that everyone is.

Anyway, we should all do something more constructive.

Everyone's shit stinks, Gniz.

You should not be meddling in something you know little about, any more that someone outside should be giving a play by play criticism of your little family situation up there.

Composure at Treeleaf is so things don't turn into hate filled tirades. Plus, you are the kind of guy who can't tell the difference between calling someone a "pipsqueak" and a "mother fucker".

I hope I showed you the difference so that you can understand, you pipsqueak.

I didn't want to get in a big fight today and face all the assholes around these blogs. But I did want to make my points about what is going on here ... shameful. You point fingers without applying much of this in your own life. You point fingers based on suppositions, you point fingers even when you know the facts you started with were incomplete.

Okay, man. As usual, we can agree to very much disagree. Your Treeleafers don't know you go around spouting that shit. Everyone on the web knows I am angry, say mean things sometimes, and swear. People in my life know it too.

I don't pretend to be anything other than what I am, for the most part.

That's true for any human being, Gniz. The point is how often and when you let it run away with you. Because it tends to run away with folks, "pipsqueak" is okay to say and "mother fucker" has to be distinquished in a Buddhist Sangha. We all say stuff like that once in awhile, but it should be the exception and not the rule.

Why don't you just admit that you said things about the Chet situation without knowing a single thing, and even after you had a good grasp of the story, you kept stirring the pot merely to make it look like something it was not?

If you really want to admit your faults, beside being honest about your own bad temper, you would be well-advised to start with that.

By the way, did you follow all proper procedures with the guy in your family? Please report to us on exactly what you did so we can make sure.

Hi Fred,

Members brought up the name/avatar issue and I didn't engage it in the 'criticism' topic because I didn't want to stray from the topic.

My behavior was not exemplary, in my estimation the rudest thing was posting an image of Jekyll & Hyde in a response to something that Jundo had written. That was a true expression of the impression it gave me, but that doesn't really mean much. Most likely I'm the only person who would ever have had that impression, partly because there are few (maybe up to around one thousand at best?) who will ever read it.

I know that many would disagree that posting the Jekyll & Hyde image was my worst transgression, questioning Jundo and others was the most reprehensible thing.

Jundo and Taigu made remarks which were more rude than anything I actually expressed. So in this case the person with anonymity was relatively more cordial if you look at the actual dialog.

In my limited experience, zazen exhausts both questions and answers, or if you wish, the need, the urge to be given a map to go and live. When ? and ! are dropped, we are taken back home, which is exactly here and now, a place we never leave. Then our being-time -here-and- now is a living question-answer. Action takes place and arises in this dynamic reality which is not anymore perceived or grasped through fears or hopes. Eating, we eat. Living, we live. Sleeping, we sleep. Or, if I put it another way, zazen is a way to redirect the flow of questions to the very source of our being-time, you actualize the fact that the answers are not anymore over there in books, traditions, teachings but that you are the answer to all the questions you ask. Questions do not beg for an answer but are seen and experienced as a way to wake up to this reality without necessarily putting your paws on any definite answer. A way to wonder, not to wander. It is true that then the whole universe, from toilets to kitchen, work and family and friends and things become the living questions put to us.

Seems like we might be at the edge of something big here - the Occupy Wall Street demonstration is spreading, including to nearby Minneapolis, completely without violence or arrest.

The portion of the 99% that I generally agree with are moving to action. Good to see and probably just the beginning of the unrest that is likely to mark the rest of the century or so until we find some new homeostasis on this little blue-dumpling planet.

Everybody knows that large-brained primates have got to make some serious accommodations to reality or suffer, suffer, suffer.

So let's get to work. Let's all sacrifice the old meaningless, wanton consumption (in all it's forms) and turn our energies to simple truths.

The pundits on the tube and in cyber-journalism that I've seen are quite critical of the Occupy movement. "What do you stand for in 5 seconds?" "Got the solution or are you just complaining?"

I like that there's a huge range of big problems that are being raised because that's real. To focus on just one thing is part of the problem. The wars and Wall Street and lack of civil liberties and killing an American citizen without due process and the richest 1% having 26% of the wealth and foreclosures and on and on. Let's get it all out there.

Got solutions? How about ending the wars now, implementing a simple tax code that's fair and will generate the income necessary to drastically reduce debt (everybody will need to pay more), putting the unemployed (including lots of soldiers we really can't afford) to work to make the world beautiful, and focusing on Green living.

How about a decade devoted to digging out and practicing what is really the most important thing in our lives?

If that is true, it's really too bad.

Perhaps he takes his Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) seriously.

If so, too bad. Scholars know it was folklore elevated to nice political propaganda but "Israel is a stubborn people."

An3drew,

Your posts have become abusive again. Have you noticed that you follow a similar pattern of posting:

when someone responds to your criticisms, you turn the dialogue into a kind of arms race, upping the anti on ever longer and more regular vertical posts, and descend into vulgar insults.

You might not think you are homophobic, but making such statements about lesbians

"i think the problem that lesbians have
is that sex is so accessible
they spend their lives in a frenzy of lust
and there's a stupidity that follows from that"

"cause there's no drag of reproduction or male sexual fatigue they don't have any brakes"

Sex is accessible to many people. That you picked on lesbians (after the thread unfortunately returned to Jundo's Gerald post and then to homophobia and Jews via Mysterion) suggests that you have a problem with them.

I have looked through your website, and I've noticed you make some disparaging generalisations about women on there. Maybe you have a problem with women? Is this true?

'no drag of reproduction' - what, do you mean that the time not spent having babies, means more time having sex?

'male sexual fatigue' - what, do you mean that, as men become sleepy after sex, or are unable to keep getting it up, lesbians are likely to spend more time having sex, or will more likely move on to another sexual encounter on the same day? If you have ever experienced a woman after she's sex, never mind had an orgasm, surely you will have found that they have also expended a ripe amount of energy.

Maybe you meant other things by your statements, but I doubt anyone with any expert or personal experience could verify they hold any significant water - about female or lesbian sexuality.

It would be very difficult to argue that your words, if not your your real private opinions, were not only homophobic but offensively so.

If you respond, could you cut out the personal abuse parts.

I really think you guys might be hurting yourselves with this behavior, i used to do the "anonymous shit stirrer" thing all the time to, and i justified it as taking down some authority or tweaking people who 'took themselves too seriously' but the reality is that I was lonely and felt unimportant and by posting all sorts of inflammatory nonsense I got some reaction from someone (it didnt matter who). it was one of the many bad habits that faded away with zazen. UNBELIEVABLE!

I wish it was.

...Some folks at Treeleaf are asking Jundo to post a link to the "other blog(s)" where, says Jundo, praxis has been moaning about his treatment at Treeleaf/stirring the shit.

My guess - you're ignoring that particular request of your sangha members as you know it would lead them here - and to links to examples of your previous behaviour, behaviour you'd rather not draw attention to. Just my opinion...no need to prove me wrong.

Jundo - you surely don't believe that the copy/paste job by someone or other over here was the work of the man himself? You know what this place is like, having taken advantage of unmoderated blogging yourself to...make a point or two in the not too distant past.

BTW, praxis' "Dear Jundo, Yes, I admit, everything you say is true and I apologize for lying to your community" is clearly sarcastic - remarkably, the first time he's shown obvious signs of exasperation. Are you trying to suggest praxis has admitted lying? Or that you're confused? All at sea? I don't buy it.

And so you've concluded that praxis is a lying, malevolent stirrer hell-bent on destroying the sangha and is therefore a candidate for expulsion? Really???

Unbelievable.

I am not praxis. I haven't got the patience.

Well, I take your point, Not a Treeleaf Supporter. But...

2) Very little that gets posted here is "on-topic". One of the charms of the place! I think that's ok. If Brad says it isn't ok, I'll respect his wishes.

3)I do my fair share of leaving it be, particularly re Jundo, but I thought I'd treat myself - just this once or twice ;)

4) There just might some be some merit in exposing hypocrisy and injustice.

5) Too late.

- but I do take your point.

- I have in the past been a (reluctant) Treeleaf supporter - I've even recommended it to a couple of folks new to Zen and without a local group/teacher. I've been confused about Jundo (I've heard one or two disturbing first hand accounts of interaction with him), but, on balance I've always wanted to give him a break...underdog and so forth. On this occasion, I don't believe I'll lose any sleep about the flak he might receive over this latest episode. It's not right.

Anonymous said...

I've been a consistent anonymous poster where it's allowed and I've consistently warned that I think, in my opinion, that Jundo is poisonous and does more harm than good.

I think the guy is a nut who is trying to force-mold himself into this character he plays.

Praxis is both toying with them over at Treeleaf and making good points.

I agree that this comment board is the very definition of off-topic, so this fits right in. Mysterion's insane postings, replete with links, are arguably never on topic, so he ought to tend his own garden.

Tattoozen, lol. You make yourself look far more silly than the imp ever could hope to.

I did get hot under the collar on a blog a couple of years ago with a rather malicious fellow spreading rumors about Treeleaf "censorship" (in fact, hey, you can see the lack of censorship around here for yourself! ). That guy was being pretty malicious and making things up. I should not have reacted by getting snarky with him.

Jundo recently posted that said...

in the post above, and he did so very recently.

It's current and it's a huge distortion of what happened during that particular incident.

Jundo is a member of this online "Buddhist" community, just like everyone here.

SERIOUS business, man said...

Dear Praxis,

Jundo wrote the following and the posters here need to weigh in.

Here is what Jundo wrote:

"Okay, I have given up trying to figure out what is going on, I have information that you may not be on the up and up, and you do not contact me to confirm your identity. You also asked many seemingly sincere and legitimate questions, but seemed to ignore the attempted responses in favor of some kind of mud stirring for mud stirring's sake. I am considering that I have to suspend your membership here.

The way we do this at Treeleaf is in the most democratic way we can, by opening the subject up right here in the open forum. You are free to speak, have folks speak for you ... and also any and all members are free to provide input and comment, pro or con. (I know that you think that the entire forum is a "lynch mob", but that is the best way we can keep things out in the sunshine.). After a couple of days of discussion, Taigu and I will decide (because we are the teachers here, and have ultimate say) based on the consensus of the community.

In the meantime, I also ask you to limit your comments and participation to this one thread pending a decision on this matter.

As I mentioned, if you have any problem with the process, we have an Ethics Committee in place, and you are free to contact any or all members if you have some complaint.

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2818

I am very sorry for this, but it strikes many of us that you are just playing games. This is maybe the 3rd or 4th time something like this has happened in our 5 years here. This is a place to practice and learn, and Taigu and I have a duty to maintaining that purpose. Still, it is sad any time.

Sadly, you're a fairly dim bulb.

Anyway, please understand that I have posted using the name "Praxis" and I am not, in fact, the "Praxis" who belongs to the internet forum you rule over.

Okay buddy?

Best,

P.S. I occasionally browse Treeleaf and ZFI now and again, as well as this website. So my knowing about Praxis just comes as a result of taking a gander at the surroundings, not because I send agent provocateurs out to try and rile up Jundo for gosh sakes.

Fabricating this whole ridiculous "Cold War" shit with agents, double agents, etc., is yet another way for "Jundo" to put himself in the middle of a controversy.

Over and over and over, this "Jundo" finds ways to land in the middle of online drama.

gniz said...

Enjoy. I will just continue to hang around here with the rest of the peeps and talk shit about nothing in particular.

My 2 cents said...

Seems to me what you are saying Gniz about centering Jundo in controversy by featuring whatever tempest in a teapot he is instigating is similar to how when other commenters refer to And3rew's comments, thereby giving him the attention he craves, it only serves to perpetuate the madness.

So hat's off to you for not doing that this time around. Let Jundo stew in his own juices. If his ratpack wants to wallow, let 'em.

Right Jundo. It's the evil doers against all the good folks of treeleaf.

Except, it's not about the people at treeleaf. It's about you and the way you twist things to excuse your continuing bizarre behavior. Your constant misunderstandings with people. Your interjections into situations where you're not wanted. Your many Zen feuds. For as long as I've known about you, you've acted in ways that cannot be described any other way but weird. So don't make this into an us against them thing. That is a really bad Zen teaching but a common cult tactic. And yeah there are some people at HCZB who are rude and coarse and even cruel. Wow. Just read Jundo's history on the Treeleaf thread in question. I do give him credit, since he linked to my site so people can simply read it and make up their own minds.

I can't say I'm upset anymore. As Harry requested, I took a few minutes away from the computer, got some relaxation and am feeling positively groovy right now.

No need to break out the knives and guns for the big fight between the Greasers and Soc's (for all you fans of S.E. Hinton).

When we practice meditation, we begin to realize what is known as the transparency and impermanence of time and space. We realize how much we are dwelling on our little things and that we cannot catch any of it and build a house on it. We cannot even lay the foundation. The whole thing keeps shifting under our feet and under our seat. The rug is being pulled out from under us completely, simply from the experience of working with ourselves. Nobody is pulling it, but we find that the rug constantly moves.

An3drew,

You only printed everything that came in the middle, not the context. You should not insult the intelligence of your readers by pulling a "FoxNews" trick, pulling things out of conversations in order to fit your agenda. That is rather low, don't you think?

Why don't you print the full statement and context on the top pages of your blog so readers can truly judge for themselves and not be deceived?

Hi An3drew,

I am not going to do anything to link to your site. I still consider this this Fox News of Zen, and you its Glenn Beck (in method, not in ratings). I thought that you started this off with some very unfair posts about Treeleaf, the "dictatorship" you seem to think we are running there, and the nefarious people that you seem to think me (and sometimes Taigu) are behind closed doors.

My mistake was to get upset with you at one point in going back and forth with your gossip mongering journalism and made up stories. I used a couple of bad words to make a point and ... oooooh, people are shocked here in Brad's little circle that somebody said a bad word. I made up a an unbelievable (and rather tasteless, I admit that) story about you and another denizen of this place to make a point about how you make up stories, and people are shocked here in "butt buddy" world. Get real, An3drew.

Speaking of "real", I also don't see what the big deal is about posting anonymously. Everyone on your blog seems to be doing so save for a handful of people. In fact, I would dare say that the majority of people posting here are doing so as "anonymous" or under pseudonyms. Why do you have an anonymous button on your blog if it is something illegal and immoral to you? As far as I see, that is how things are done around here ... why the sudden outrage about being "anonymous" to say something controversial? Like everyone else, I used it when I wanted to make a point without (unfortunately, it did not turn out that way) getting into an argument with you directly. All my posts were about, quite rightly, how you (by your admission) twisted and exaggerated facts, and pointed fingers at a situation in our Sangha which you knew nothing about. I stand by those.

An3drew, are you upset because "good two shoes" Jundo used a couple of bad words? Its okay from Brad but not for me? He can make "butt buddy" jokes and I can't. It is really confusing the double and triple standards around here.

I walked into this, my fault. I saw you were lying about something, and I stupidly came here to tell you off ... and I got too upset with you. I used some bad words. But the point I was making about your lying, exaggerating and twisting fact, and speaking out of ignorance ... ALL remains TRUE. I stand by that, and apologize to you only for my Brad Warner like salty language.

Gassho.

Hey Andrew, have you seen the video of Brad's new enlightenment technique?

You should try it!

An3dy said...

An3drew, you are right. I came here out of misguided "principle" to correct some untruths and half truths about the situation with Chet. I should not have allowed myself to be pulled into the morass, let alone get upset about it.

An3dy said...

An3drew,

I used some very salty language and a tasteless story to make a point about -not- using salty language and about making up stories ... and because that is how people talk in this little corner of the Buddha-net. I was wrong to do what is 'done here'. I hit the "anonymous" button when I wanted to make a point without saying it directly, and because that is what I saw is 'done here'. I was wrong to do so. As someone who is supposed to be a 'Buddhist teacher', I should not be allowed to fall into the morass of using bad words, etc.

I apologize for that.

There are really evil people out there in "spirituality" land who are truly taking advantage of people, defrauding them out of money, sleeping with students using their influence over them. Go after those guys, An3drew, and do it in a high minded way. You perform a great service by doing so.

Gassho.

From Shambhala Sunspace (back before Jundo created a controversy regarding himself and Taigu somehow being "wronged" by the Sunspace editors, who objected to them hogging the blog with multiple posts/day, and got himself removed):

Jundo · 6 hours ago

Some lessons learned by me:

Never try to convince a man that it is not good to hit people with a baseball bat ... by hitting him with a baseball bat (I speak figuratively ... I would never hit someone with a baseball bat, lest someone take me literally!)

Never try to convince someone not to play with matches in a room filled with gasoline ... by grabbing the matches and lighting them in a room filled with gasoline (oh, you will make the point alright ... but at what cost?)

Never try to show someone who uses foul language and the "n word" etc. why foul language and insults are frowned upon in a Buddhist Sangha ... by using foul language back at him.

Most of all, I have learned that when a fellow on the internet is having troubles and issues in his life, and, by his own confession, using you as a stress reliever for his troubles by going after your Sangha and you with poison pen essays and tirades on his blog ... JUST LET HIM DO IT! As my father from the bronx used to say, "You can call me any name you want, just don't call me late for dinner". Dad also said that there are always people in this life to throw bricks and sticks. All I can say is that I have developed new respect for President Obama, that "secret muslim born in Africa nazi-communist friend of 60's terrorists", for having such a thick skin when the mud throwers and rumor mongers and "quoters out of context" go after him ... with whole tv networks ... day in day out. (Not commenting on politics, just on his personality), that man is NATURALLY ZEN when it comes to things like that!

I need to learn from "Buddha Barack" when the folks at "Wild Fox News" turn their fire his way.

Jundo's modest proposal to Nishijima:

"Dear Roshi,

Roshi, I would like to make a formal motion and proposal for your approval regarding your recent announcement regarding Dogen Sangha International.

The title of the position that Brad will take will be changed from "Leader" to "Head Helper".

The reason is that, in a modern democratic organization, we are a union or federation of your Dharma Heirs, brothers and sisters, who must help each other. This is in keeping with the Precepts and the cooperative nature of a Sangha. It is not appropriate (and several members, including myself, do not wish to belong to) any organization that has a "Leader" after you. So, the title "Leader" is fitting, perhaps, to a feudal, Japanese organization, but is not appropriate to the modern, Western Sangha you wish to leave. The duties of the "Head Helper" would not be to "lead" the organization, but to work for out mutual cooperation and to be, not a leader or commander, but the first to offer aid to all others as a brother among brothers.

Furthermore, the "Head Helper" would commit to always act with the dignity of the Sangha, you and his brothers and sisters in mind in his or her conduct.

As a second motion, I would also propose that there be a term limit of 5 years on "Head Helper", at which time other members of the Sangha can be proposed to be "Head Helper" elected by majority vote.

Please consider these idea appropriate for modern democratic societies of the 21st century.

Please indicate your approval by changing your message on your Dogen Sangha blog accordingly.

Gassho, Jundo"

Here’s the Simple How-To of Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is when mind and body are wholly engaged with what is happening. No evaluating, no judging, no stories or notions about it. Just full engagement.

Mindfulness meditation is simply wholeheartedly observing our breath.

Mindfulness is the driving force of a clear, peaceful, calm, quiet and confident mind. Meditation is what charges our mindfulness battery.

What do we do? We just sit, still, without moving, and focus on our breath. No numbers, no words, no visualizations, no wondering about the breathing. Just noticing it go in and out: in the diaphragm, chest, or at the tip of the nostrils. When a thought, a sensation, a feeling, a sound, whatever, arises as a distraction and we notice that we are thinking or feeling of hearing, we let go of that distraction and mindfully return to observing our breath.

We don’t judge or evaluate our meditation. We just sit.

Meditation is about letting go, not attaining. How do we let go? We let go by focusing our attention on something else. For example, when we notice we are listening to a bird, we let go by simply (re)focusing on our breath.

We allow the breath to be natural. We don’t try to change it or control it. We simply breathe. Simply observe. We become calmer, healther, and more peaceful.

When we hear a bird we are one
with the sound of the bird. We
watch our mind trying to place a
name on that bird. We remember
Gudo's words to stop the thoughts
from arising. The words drift off,
as we observe the hand lifting a
coffee cup to the lips, the steam
from the coffee entering our
nostrils. The liquid rolls over
the tongue, tasting, tasting,
tasting...
