See You in Ballymena and Talk in Wuppertal Videos
Today, June 17, 2010 (Thurs) I'll have a public talk and Q&A at 7-9pm hosted by the Ballymena Zen Group at St John Hall, 11a Corlea Gardens, Ballymena, Northern Ireland BT43 7AR, near the Old Library.
Hanny Van de Weerdt, who kindly hosted me in The Netherlands, posted videos of my talk in Wuppertal, Germany on YouTube. Here's the first one:
And for those of you who aren't seeing the embedded video, here are links to the four parts she posted:
Part One
Part Two
Part Three

So now you know what I've been doing in Europe. Enjoy!

In oneself lies the whole world and if you know how to look and learn, the door is there and the key is in your hand. Nobody on earth can give you either the key or the door to open, except yourself.
I just watched all 4 parts of Brad's talks. 35 minutes of my life just gone. Well, Zen is pointless I guess.
Great talk Brad. Thanks for the links.
I love that part when you ask if anyone has questions and at first nobody does. When this happened at the Dharma Talks during the Brooklyn Sesshin I thought it was all my fault for not coming up with a really insightful question.
During the awkward silence you seem to be both innocently embarrassed, and in the middle of playing out some sort of a personal joke. It's fun to watch the exact same thing happen with completely different people.

Your guess is in error.
There is nothing to guess about.

This is best responded to with 4:33 of silence.
Just so are these preachers and scholars holding various views blind and unseeing..
In his ignorance he is by nature quarrelsome, wrangling, and disputatious, maintaining reality is thus and thus.
Life can be found only in the present moment. The past is gone, the future is not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we cannot be in touch with life.
anon at 8:55 please do not quote buddhist texts or sutras. Buddha died a long time ago and we can't be sure he actually said any of the things people claim he said. Buddha was probably an asshole like the rest of us. If you must quote, please quote master dogen, gudo or brad. Those are our authorities, not some fakir lost in the mists of time.
I'm a Zen monkey, wannabe writer, bass fisherman and porno film-maker. I wrote the books Cardwhore Zen, Shut up and Fuck Off! and my latest, Zen Wrapped in Krap Dipped in Bullshit. My Zen pedigree, for those who value such things, is that I received an authentic Transmission from AAMCO which at the time was managed by some guy that once studied zen in Japan or something. I was also a student of Mary Kay Letourneau who was a student of Koko the clown. I enjoy getting your dirty pictures. But please be aware, if you send me a naked pic of yourself, I may use it in a blog either here or sell it to a porno site for money.

Hi Brad! Pre-ordered your book through Amazon... looking forward to it.
There's nothing to know
And there's no-one to know it
There's just this moment
...and this moment
is on a delay,
perception arrives
too late to be reliable
But who can know it's late?
When you try and consider the present, you are always doing so from the past. The only way to be present is not to intellectualize it.
So consideration (whistler) and perception (John e) are, somehow not 'of this moment'. Only action/activity/doing is: where/where else can you act but here/now?
BTW, Gudo Nishijima's "Three views, or philosophies/one Reality" approach attempts to reconcile these apparently contradictory perspectives:
1) Idealism (subjectivity, based on consideration); 2) Materialism (objectivity, based on sensory perception); and 3) the synthesis of 1) and 2) in Action (the Buddhist view). But the fourth, he says, is Reality - the ineffable truth of all that is, inclusive of the these three, but not limited by them.
A song for Seagal
There should be a "." after "Seagal".
And on 108's it should be "pseudo objectivity" instead of "objectivity". (In anyone’s possible humble opinion.)
Only the fourth one is [truly] objective.
But then these things get discussed so much.
When you try and consider the present, you are always doing so from the past. The only way to be present is not to intellectualize it.
It's an interesting indea, but this statement is an intellectualization itself. All we can know is sense forms. Early, late? Who's to say? Who is experiencing them early to know that they are experiencing them late?
If there's nothing to know and there's no one to know it, IMHO there would be no time.
A mental viewpoint
And a physical viewpoint
Not this, not that, just...
There's nothing to know
And there's no-one to know it
How do you know that?
There's nothing to know
And there's no-one to know it
"How do you know that?"
ooh ooh, I know, I know! **waves hand wildly from back row**
I know because I don't no.
Yes?
as always, this comment section makes me really good at using the scroll wheel on my mouse....
matt
Jinzang's @ 4:58 is where common sense does win a point on the way to ineffability.
Don't call me Steph!
The more you know
The more you know
You don't know what you know
Stone's throw left to go
Bad weather hell for leather
Now and zen you goof again
You never blow your trip forever
- Gong (You)
Had I been Genpo I would have copied and documented Brad's comment [- @ 2:17 PM] here as to show what he considers genius.
I can't see what it is J wants to say in his last one, - but it doesn't seem like an expression of one who is further worthy than the taste of the stick.
It seems real stupid putting "Gong" at the end and expecting an answer.
But then again - if I am wrong - (hardly possible - in my view) expound.
Ran -
GONG
and YOU
That was me ^...Forgot to change nicks
it doesn't matter what your momma calls you.
