ARRIVED IN JERUSALEM

I just arrived in Jerusalem and am piggy-backing on a WiFi signal I shall surely lose in mere seconds.

Just enough time to post the photo that should have gone with the previous posting.

This is some graffiti I spotted in Belfast.

Ironic, n'est pas?

As for the LV-Brad dialogue under the previous post: I don’t want to comment as for the “cultural boycott” (I don’t know if there is one, I know the Pixies and Elvis Costello canceled; - but then I almost don’t read the papers) since I don’t know what is going on in Gaza.

As for: “If U2 canceled a concert or something, that would have meaning. Brad Warner canceling a talk? Seriously? Who would even notice?” - this should not be of concern. If you actually believed in such sanctions this should not be a calculation.

However: You are not an entertainer. Even if we assume such “boycotting” (- which seems stupid to me, given that you can call it “cultural”; - I am only referring to that which can so be called) right and just, - avoiding from spearing the Buddha Dharma (which is what brad is doing, whatever you call it) due to political reasons, or generally any kind of secular protest, could not be acceptable.

I am quite confident, that if we take the Dalai Lama for example, who visits Israel occasionally, - the thought of canceling a visit for such reasons would never have even occurred to him.

Even under the roughest conditions, far beyond anything which might be relevant here, such “respecting of a cultural boycott” might not be able to exceed the borders of stupidity in real existence.

should of course be - “spreading The BD” - rather than - “spearing”; - though Brad might sometimes try both

Brad, You always could visit Gaza yourself and see about the conditions over there. Even the Israeli bloggers here don't seem to know much about that. Maybe this idea is naivety on my part because I don't know if you would even be allowed in or if you could afford to go. I don't think they would pay you for a talk. :)

Apart from Ran, who just don't read much, who are they?

Tell us what it's like in Gaza, Tudven. I assume you've been there.

[From the dialogue under the previous post to 108:]

Of course not all Americans love guns and shopping. But I am an American and you are not. I do know my peeps. The American system is built around planned obsolescence of goods and the right to bear arms to protect the shit. Because we will shoot you if you try to take it. Does every American own a gun?
No.
Are there three shooting ranges within walking distance of my house.
Yes.
Of course that doesn't prove anything. But in America there are more guns than people. Over 350,000,00 of them. And probably millions more than that. Many Americans don't want others to find out about their Russian assault rifles and anti-tank weapons. My mild-mannered boss owns a street-sweeper. Highly illegal I believe..

Fair enough, 7.45am. As a generalisation, your observation can be supported.

But I think - particularly when touching on very controversial, sensitive subjects like this (Israel/politics) - that generalisations are at best of little use, and at worst, harmfully misleading.

"and I'm sure we'd disagree about just what was 'spun' by whom and how. Neither of us were there; what can we truly 'know'?"

If you feel we had to be there to talk about these matters, We just ain't going to talk about them..
Which is probably good. Because we wouldn't want to harmfully mislead anyone about the Israel/Palestine horror. Maybe it will just go away.

One thing I am convinced of, 7.45am - our discussions - the ones you and I are not going to have;) - however passionate, will have absolutley no effect at all on bringing this conflict to a peaceful resolution.

We can discuss war and peace in far-flung places, but if we can't recognise each other's right to a different opinion here and now, what hope for anyone, anywhere?

The Orange Irish and Green Irish are masters of slaughter.

"Do as we say, not as we do."

The way you stop the killing is you just stop killing. Both sides of both places have real assholes.

Hell, even in a crowd of one there is a real asshole (unless there has been a colostomy along the way). In that case, someone is brown bagging it.

there's no shit like the same old shit...

Just to explain the pro- palestinian graffiti. As all things in Norn Iron are seperate. The catholics support the palestinians and the prods the Israeli cause. The real strange thing is that ( and i have seen this)you can see the star of David flying over "C-18"

C-18 is Combat 18 (18 represents the A and H in the alphabet for a Herr Adolph Hitler)and as you can guess its a neo Nazi group. Some call it irony, I call it stupidity, you all can make up your own mind.

Brad please be safe and come back to Ireland soon. Hope you enjoyed Reptilia.

Harry mate get the podcasts of the Ricky Gervais show. well worth it.

Peace.

Yes, that is a very cool theory! Or maybe I'm using feeds in my phone. Or maybe we're True Geeks (tm) with Harry. Or maybe those all theories are true! *X-Files theme*

Hey Hokai/Gerald, nice quote, did you like the rest of the Shinzen Young interview?

Harry said...

Hee hee,

Hi Bob. People who can't control themselves are often not the best judges of what they themselves or other people should submit to.

The resulting scandals are still heard of.

Now, just who or what are we submitting to?

Regards,

Harry.

Harry:

I suspect you are on to something.

Buddhism isn't about being better than someone else...

It's about being better than you now are, even if you are a mean, cruel, nasty womanizer or a quiet reclusive bodhisattva.

None among us need to be overly concerned with the merit - or lack thereof - in another. It's just that where an obvious lack of merit is displayed in action, one need not emulate the agent of that action.

P.S. a bodhisattva is NOT a saint, it is merely an enlightened being who, out of compassion, forgoes nirvana in order to save others.
