FINLAND IS WHERE I AM!

I just arrived in Finland last night. They're racing me all over the country starting in about an hour. So I have no time to write anything profound.

The Frankfurt sesshin was wonderbar! Many thanks to everyone attended and big special thanks to Regina Oberndorfer for making the whole thing happen. The photo is a shot of the whole group on the last day. The quilt I'm wearing over my shoulder is actually a kesa made by Michel Proulx from fabric scraps donated from all over Europe. Groovey!

I'd like to direct your attention to the page linked over there to your left about my tour in case you're in Finland and want to see some of the stuff. It's over there<<<<<<

Here's where I'll be today:

•August 24, 2009 (Mon) 4 – 5:30 pm Zazen at Joogastudio Samadhi, Askaistentie 89, 20810 Turku, After zazen there will a talk and open discussion. Contact: Ari Vuokko studio@olen.to
•August 24, 2009 (Mon) 6:30 - 8:00 pm, public lecture at Turku Main Library's lecture hall (Studio) Linnankatu 2, 20100 Turku.

I like that no one thought to take that camera out of the frame. It's like a modern-day Valazquez: the camera that photographs itself.

Doesn't seem like there is a Tour Dates thing on the site anywhere, any chance you are coming to England?

Very nice pic. And confirmation - with no offence to the ladies pictured therein - that Dogen Sangha, or zen in general, ain't the place to go if you wanna pick up chicks.

not a place to pick up guys either

According to recent statistics on western buddhism, soto zen (as a whole) has more female adherents than male while rinzai zen has more male. Thus proving conclusively that soto is for pussies, but probably a better place to pick up chicks. I'm just saying.

Priceless.

Congratulations on the occasion of this success.

rinzai zen is sometimes viewed at being composed of stuffy intellectuals... that koan stuff.

Many local Temples are "Interfaith practice" - Japanese Soto/Rinzai Zen

some say 40% of all american buddhists live in LA. But then 70% of the RCs are latino immigrants.

* Bangladesh: Muslim 88.3%, Hindu 10.5%, other 1.2%
* India: Hindu 80%, Muslim 14%, Christian 2.4%, Sikh 2%, Buddhist 0.7%, Jains 0.5%, other 0.4%
* Philippines: Roman Catholic 83%, Protestant 9%, Muslim 5%, Buddhist and other 3%
* Japan: observe both Shinto and Buddhist 84%, other 16% (including Christian 0.7%)
* South Korea: Christian 49%, Buddhist 47%, Confucianist 3%, Shamanist, Chondogyo (Religion of the Heavenly Way), and other 1%

When Dogen (founder of the Japanese Soto school) returned to Japan from China, his pilgrimage was recorded in a collection of koans called 'the Chinese Shobogenzo.' This collection of three hundred koans was published in 1766 under the title Shobogenzo Sambyakusoku (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye: Three Hundred Cases). It was the foundation for Dogen's better known Kana Shobogenzo. Dogen's collection of koans may surprise students of the Soto school (generally known for "just sitting"). Dogen did use koans extensively in his teaching.

If picking up chicks / guys is your intention when attending a Zen sesshin, you maybe should re-consider your motivation and go to a pub. There are better places for picking up, like the ones where you can talk and can skip the painfully legs.

HG -

I don't think anyone attends a sesshin with the intention of picking up chicks, or guys. But if you're suggesting that the guys (particularly) should, or do, drop off their interest in women along with their shoes, at the door, so that they might wholeheartedly pursue spiritual truth (what IS that?), then I think you're mistaken or in denial.

People have met their future husbands/wives at meetings of Buddhist groups/shesshin. That's how people work; they meet each other in groups - of all sorts. And BTW, not all shessin are silent - those held by Dogen Sangha, for example, aren't.

There's nothing wrong with "picking up" chicks and/or guys, even at a sesshin. As Nishijima has said, "Desire is life itself".

I had an amazing weekend. On my journey back I realised the groups energy really had a great effect on how the Sesshin worked out. Brad, thanks for uploading that pic, my 35 mm is going to be a couple weeks before the roll is finished and the photos are developed. ahhh.. the pleasures of waiting.

This will not truly have success, I consider so.
