Wii ZEN

TRANSLATION:

Announcer: Mr. Gori’s training.

On screen words: The flame will still your confused mind. Without moving, quietly allow your mind to settle.

Loud voice: Katsu! (nonsense syllable used mainly at Rinzai temples often as kind of reprimand)

Announcer: Game over. For your family health, Wii Fit.

On screen words: Weight, BMI (body mass index??), Center of gravity balance, Various training. Wii Fit, List price 8,800 yen.

Mr. Gori: But I was thinking of the blue skies and blue sea of Okinawa the whole time!

I've seen worse stuff advertised in the backs of Buddhist magazines...

What a mockery, is it a good thing that people reduce Zen practice to some video-game like competition?

it's not so hard to believe, is it?

Think of how people treat Koans. Fun party time riddles for pretentious fucks.

That being said, this is the coolest game i've read about in a long time:

So... if it gave him a good 10,000V shot in the ass, it was o.k.

And it costs less than the e-Meter!

I think you guys are missing what seems to me a pretty obvious joke. I’m appaled that people are taking wii fit ’s “stillness” minigame at face value as a medidation thingie. What next, you’re going to flame Rhythm Tengoku because it can’t actually teach shodō?

ITT: Zen dudes angry that someone made a satire of the stereotypicalness of their practices; what a sight…

I think this ad is using humor to sell its product. It's like that "Grand Theft Auto" -style Coca-Cola advert where the main character does good deeds and passes out Cokes. . . .

Even so, real or not, the advert, and the concept, is hilarious.

I would totally play that.

LOL! That ad is awesome!

I've never heard of katsu being used by anyone, rinzai or not, as a reprimand.

"In addition, the bringing about of enlightenment by the opportunity provided by a finger, a banner, a needle, or a mallet, and the effecting of realization with the aid of hossu, a fist, a staff, or a shout, cannot be fully understood by discriminative thinking."--Master Dogen / Fukanzazengi

The shout (ho in chinese, katsu or kwatz in japanese) was also recognized by Master Dogen.

Both stupid and funny.

I have composed a verse:

Video game satori
Realising Zen stupidity
Kwatz!

doesn't seem like a video game to me--looks like something you sit on instead of a zafu. and you sit vawy vawy still.
and if you wiggle...
KATSU!
game over.

So it's a sitting still game, at least that's what I make of it.

I sure don't speak no Japanese.

yeah--now that my computer works a bit and i can see the vid--totally satirical. Actually it's fairly hip considering buddhist nerds and non-nerds (and non-buddhists) should get the joke.

I totally aced that segment of the game. When do I receive my vows?

Anonymous said...

I'm still playing it.

I may be denser than most, but, uh, is this game for real? I initially thought this was satire.
