SHAMBHALA SUN ARTICLE
Here's a nice article that's going to be published in the upcoming issue of Shambhala Sun. You can also go here to read it on-line instead of as a PDF file. I'm not sure I see myself quite the way the writer does. But that ain't no thang. It's still an interesting article. To me it's interesting to be able to see that perspective. I don't see myself as part of any movement. As I've said a zillion times, I really, honest to God thought there was absolutely no possibility at all for Hardcore Zen to even get published, let alone become popular. Shows you what I know. Cuz last Friday for the first time ever in my life I was stopped on the street by someone I'd never met before who recognized me from the photos on the backs of my books. That's a very strange thing...
Anyway they wanted me to include a link to the Shambhala Sun website if I used the article here. So there it is.
Don't forget, if you're in the LA area tomorrow, you are hereby ORDERED to attend the screening of my movie Cleveland's Screaming at the Egyptian Theater.

Get used to it, Brad! Mysterion's got a shrine to you tucked away somewhere. But it doesn't even come close to touching the 873 photo collection I have of you grocery shopping, sitting zazen, and vomiting blood on helpless onlookers. I wallpapered my bathroom with them!
It's not a bad article, though I don't think it's quite fair or even accurate to lump you guys together, due to the different schools and approaches, etc., but it seems to me to be a shift from what people were doing in the 60's and 70's. There are apparently enough people interested in this approach to warrant calling it a "movement"? Whether it's suitably convincing to actually get people to sit down and practice... we'll see.
I've been to a few sittings with Nichtern here in NYC and he is a pretty straight up character from what I can tell, so it's unnecessary to be too apprehensive about that--but yeah, the media is going to have a freakin' field day with you guys.
Stay cynical!
How does Brad qualify as a young turk? He's two years older than my Grandpa.. Did Mysterion write that article?
I, too, have been to sittings with Ethan Nichtern in NYC. Also, his Dad, David Nichtern. I like both of them very much. The thing is, once I found out the Dad, David, wrote the music and lyrics for Midnight at the Oasis, quieting my mind was far more difficult. Whether you like the song, or you hate it, there is something about it . . . it just kept knocking at my brain, testing me, driving me mad. send your camel to bed . . . Uh-oh.
Hell, the writer was just looking for a hook to hang a story on. "Buddhism: The New Generation" is as good a hook as any. Not true, not false, just a story, or a "meme."
Brad, when you do kinhin at your weekly sit, do you make everyone walk like Godzilla?
I must have met David Nichtern sometime during my long wander through Shambhala. And now his son is teaching. Fuck, I'm getting old.
What is big-E enlightenment as a way of doing things rather than a way of understanding things?

"Buddhism’s Young Turks" sounds
an awful lot like
"Buddhism's Young Butt-Buddies"!
Y'know, "punk" as in
Turkish prisons
and all that jazz...
or maybe it's more like
))<>((
forever
and "butt-buddies" is just another
way of saying "sangha"
--people who sit on their butts together--
me and you and everyone we know .
A monk asked: what is buddha?
Yun-men said: dried poop-scoop.
What is it with Buddhists over the age of 43 and their terminal affection for buckets!
Buckets, buckets, buckets!
Brad does not belong in a bucket with Noah or David.
Brad cannot be put in a bucket!
There is no bucket!
Yeeeeaaahhhhh! No buckets!
Jinzang asked,
"Brad, when you do kinhin at your weekly sit, do you make everyone walk like Godzilla?"
Speaking from my own experience at the Hill St. Center, our kinhin is more like the Quasimodo Cakewalk. :D
. . . kick up a little dust.
" . . . kick up a little dust."
Cooooome on...the cactus is our friend....

Just yankin' yer mala, friend :-)
Hi everyone:
Cleveland's Screaming! was great! I brought my wife and our friend, neither of whom likes or cares about punk, and they loved it. It's very personal, funny, and it draws you into the story. I'm going to alert our city attorney to all the libelous LA-bashing in it, but other than that it's a really good movie.
And thanks a lot. The next time I walk kinhin, am I going to be observing my mind walking kinhin? No, I'm going to be restraining myself from walking like Godzilla. @#$%^&*!
Rob
Don't forget that Mysterion patronized me.

Jinzang: LOL :-)
Jinzang,
"Brad, when you do kinhin at your weekly sit, do you make everyone walk like Godzilla?"
You are a funny guy! You've changed my mind, Perl Rules.
That alone would be worth flying across the country to Santa Monica! Maybe he would take request and do kyosaku as Utraman and zap us with his death ray.
Just saw this , and I thought it would make a great intro for Brad’s film,
Henry Rollins as a jujyfruit!
